For Objects and Slides, Sam Smith continues his investigation into the apparatus of cinema as a sculptural form and the (de)construction of time and space within this. The exhibition is comprised of a suite of newly cast sculptures and a slide carousel projection, which Smith views as an extension of the studio work made for his two-channel video installation Cameraman 2011. And as such, the objects made for Cameraman are brought from the screen and into the gallery space. In playing with this idea of cinema as three-dimensional, Smith fractures and distorts the image of the camera lens whilst rendering it solid through the casting process. Also featured is a photographic sequence titled Time-lapse 2011 depicting Cameraman’s central sculpture in various states of degradation, introducing the concept of time to this static sequence.
